About the AIUS...

Independent and not-for-profit, the Australian Institute of Urban Studies (AIUS) provides a prime opportunity for members to participate in the ongoing debate about urban affairs in Australia.

The Western Australian Chapter of AIUS has been involved in generating debate and lobbying government on key issues affecting our urban environment. The AIUS was involved in the debate and lobbied on the expansion of the Perth Rail Network, in particular in relation to the central business district.

The primary benefit of the AIUS is that it is not linked to a sole profession or persuasion, meaning that it allows and encourages robust debate from ALL who have an interest in what happens to our cities and towns.

AIUS seminars, workshops and conferences raise awareness about the planning, development and management of sustainable cities, tackling issues relating to urban design, social fabric, culture, and urban infrastructure.

The AIUS has:

  • The Institute was founded in 1967 through the initiative of the then Australian Planning Institute and the Social Science Research Council;
  • Supported by membership subscriptions and by occasional grants from government and other sources, the AIUS considers its primary resource to be the rich diversity of its members, and the rewarding personal and corporate interactions which this generates;
  • AIUS is Australia's only widely representative, multi-discipline, national organisation dealing with the full spectrum of urban issues;
  • Membership is open to all who have an interest in, and concern for, the future of our cities and towns. Typically, this includes individuals and organisations from government, the private sector, academia, the urban professions and conservation interests.
